The short bio:
Hi there! This is the personal website of David Papandrew. Friends often call me “Papa”. I’m an entrepreneur living in San Francisco, California. I’ve co-founded two successful companies, Fanpop (a social network for shared interests and hobbies) and Revel (enterprise artificial intelligence).
I’m interested in habits, ideas, learning and self-improvement and, of course, entrepreneurship. When I’m not working or parenting, I enjoy playing the piano, cooking and reading.
The long bio:
I was born on the island of Oahu in beautiful Hawaii in the early 70s. Upon graduating from high school I headed to the “mainland” for college. I attended Occidental College for my undergraduate degree and Harvard University for my graduate degree.
Following my time on the East Coast, I headed back to California and set my roots in the Bay Area during the Dotcom Boom. Over the course of a decade I worked at Charles Schwab (online trading support), Yahoo! (on the popular Yahoo Finance property), Yodlee/Evestnet (financial data aggregator) and Ziff Davis Media (video game properties).
In 2006, I started my entrepreneurial journey full-time when I started Fanpop, a network of fan-sites. The site quickly became a popular destination for enthusiastic discussion about youth pop culture topics such as movies, music and television. With our small but dedicated team, we Fanpop achieved profitability in its second year; growing from nothing to a peak audience of 65 million monthly unique users and a quarter billion pageviews a month.
In 2018, I co-founded Revel, Inc. with my former Fanpop colleagues. Revel provides machine learning solutions to enterprise customers. Revel’s first product is an image recognition service that allows companies to accurately process and identify large amounts of data quickly and inexpensively.
I’m happily married for over 20 years and am the proud father to 3 kids. I still visit Hawaii annually and dream of retiring in paradise. Like most locals from Hawaii, I love SPAM and will never refuse the offer of a well-crafted SPAM musibi.
I’m an avid “Apple guy” having grown up with an Apple IIe and the original 128k Mac at home. Despite a brief dalliance with Windows laptops in the mid-90s during the “dark days” of Apple, there’s always been a Mac in my home and I remain a committed Apple Fanboy.
Music figures prominently into my extracurriculars. I grew up playing and studying a number of instruments including guitar, ukulele, cello and voice. For the past few years I’ve been resurrecting my piano skills and have been committed to daily practice. My current “stretch” piece is Brahms Opus 118, No. 2. I’m an avid reader and podcast listener. I love classic video games (and a few current titles like Blizzard’s Overwatch) and am loathe to skip my daily exercise regimen (I don’t skip leg day!!!).
